Visitors to Malawi cannot but notice the friendly disposition and welcoming nature of the country’s people. Despite being one of the world's poorest nations, Malawians display a strong sense of pride and determination to overcome the daily challenge of providing food for families, generating cash for education or paying for health care. The majority of the population lives below the poverty line with an average income of US$160 per annum – that’s less than US$0.50 per day! Government resources are severely limited and allow for a mere US$12 per person to be spent on healthcare each year resulting in the lowest ratio of doctors to patients in the world today. More than half our population is under the age of 15 and education is basic to say the very least with an average pupil / teacher ratio of 95:1. Just over 1 million children are orphaned partly due to the high HIV/AIDS infection rates in the country.
Faced with these statistics one might feel a little overwhelmed and it is astounding to watch Malawians overcome the hardships of life in a developing country. With a positive approach to life and strong social and family structures, Malawi’s population still manage to extend the warmest welcome to visitors from abroad and share some of the hospitality for which the country is famous.
The incredible generosity and support of humanitarian organizations, the international donor community, global corporations, missionary and church groups and individuals continue to provide hope and support to some of the countries poorest communities. Schools, orphanages, clinics, hospitals and feeding scheme projects all contribute to helping Malawians overcome the challenges of daily life. Ulendo are proud to have had the privilege of assisting groups and individuals who travel to Malawi to work on community projects or lend their support in anyway they can and would be pleased to put you in contact with some of the amazing volunteers and organizations committed to improving the quality of life in our country.
