Mangochi

Mangochi, or "the Big Mango", lies at the extreme southern tip of Lake Malawi where the Shire River begins it's journey to The Zambezi and ultimately the Indian Ocean. Founded as a British army colonial post in the 1890's - the town has been a slave market and important trading centre in its history. Today Mangochi is an important administrative centre for the region and is considered the gateway to the resorts and lodges scattered along the southern shore of Lake Malawi. Some of the countries best-known resorts such as Club Makokola and Nkopola Lodge are close to the town and offer some excellent facilities for visitors to the region.
