The world’s first freshwater national park, Cape Maclear and its islands, forests and bay were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. While the national park does not host traditional game and wildlife populations, it provides a great opportunity to see some of the 500 species of cyclid fish in the clear water around Cape Maclear as well as boasting several breeds of bird including kingfishers, Dickinson's kestrels, and freckled nightjars.
As one of the countries best-known tourist destinations, the area is popular with backpackers and exclusive travellers alike. There are lively bars, traditional restaurants, lodges and guesthouses in the bay and activities available in include snorkelling, hiking, boat cruises, kayaking, and diving. Chembe village is possibly one of Malawi’s largest traditional fishing villages and locals play an important role in developing tourism in the area. In recent years superb accommodation options have become available in the area and include the chic Pumulani Lodge, Kayak Africa’s unique island lodges on Domwe and Mumbo Islands while Danforth Yachting provide exclusive yacht charters and accommodation at their beach property.
